If you've been in any business conversation about AI in the last year, you've heard both names. ChatGPT from OpenAI. Claude from Anthropic. Both are large language models. Both are used by millions of businesses. They're not the same.
Here's how they actually differ: from the perspective of someone who uses both to build real business systems.
What ChatGPT Does Best
ChatGPT has the largest ecosystem of integrations, plugins, and third-party tools. If you want to connect AI to your existing business software stack, ChatGPT (via the OpenAI API) has more out-of-the-box compatibility than anything else on the market. It's also better for structured output: JSON, data extraction, code generation. If you're building automations that need AI to process data in a predictable format, GPT-4 is usually the right choice.
Its browser capability (via the real-time browsing tools) also makes it useful for research-heavy tasks where current information matters.
What Claude Does Best
Claude's strength is longer, more nuanced text. If you need AI to write something that sounds genuinely human: sales copy, client communications, detailed reports, analysis: Claude tends to produce work that reads less like a machine and more like a thoughtful person.
Claude also has a significantly larger context window in its most recent versions, meaning it can process and reason over entire documents, contracts, or data sets in a single session. For businesses that work with dense information: legal, financial, medical: this matters.
Claude also tends to be more careful and more willing to say "I'm not sure" rather than confidently producing wrong information. For business-critical decisions, that matters more than most people realize.
Which One to Use
The honest answer: use both, for different things. ChatGPT for structured automations, integrations, and data processing. Claude for writing, analysis, and any task where quality of reasoning matters more than speed of output.
If I had to pick one for a business owner starting out: Claude for most day-to-day writing and thinking tasks. ChatGPT API for building automated workflows.
The goal isn't to pick a winner. It's to understand what each tool does well and build your system accordingly.
